ACE Mentor 2017 Field Trip – Regional
Thursday, March 9th, 2017 Students from the ACE Mentoring Program were fortunate enough to get a first hand tour of the UNF construction management/technology program along with the Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center Construction Site and Antique and Modern Cabinets main production warehouse. UNF officials and former MHS graduate Paulo Dos Santos (UNF Sophomore) provided a behind the scenes guided tour of the construction management/technology program. Students visited resource labs, Concrete stress labs, work shops and study areas.
The Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center is still under construction, but students were able to walk through the site while the DPR Construction Project Managers provided much needed information on the site since students will be completing their own design project for this area in two months during the ACE regional competition. Students will be competing for best design of one of three projects; the courtyard, the bridge addition, and the cafeteria.
The last stop was Antique and Modern Cabinets, Inc., a family own company that creates custom cabinetry using AutoCAD and uses large machines to cut the pieces out of various materials. This trip is to benefit students interested in architecture, construction and engineering in hopes that they learn more about their prospective careers but also get the chance to see what really goes on in the field. Special thanks to Brooke Robbins of RobbinsDesignStudio for her mentorship each Tuesday and dedication to the students advancement into the field of architecture, construction and engineering. MHS -ACE meets every Tuesday 2-4pm in room 361-A (Drafting).
